Today was Strange...

You may have been watching the news today and heard about the F-18 fighter jet that crashed into a home in SD... well, I happened to be about a block away heading to my lunch break destination when it went down, I saw it flying awfully low and thought it was odd then it went spiraling downward and BOOM in a residential neighborhood! It was the strangest thing I have ever witnessed. It hit a house and killed 3 people, I saw the aftermath as a bunch of people were then taken to the hospital I work at right down the street and treated for smoke inhalation from the resulting fires.. I guess you just never know what will happen in life or when a fighter jet will crash through your home..

Its so sad, I can only imagine the devastation the family of the victims must be going through with such an ironic tragedy.. Here is the link to the full story..

Street Scene!

San Diego has an amazing Music Scene which is definatly a perk to living here. I have an instilled love of music in me and a hobbie of going to as many live concerts as I can squeeze into my life (Thanks to my Dads genetics)...

Last weekend, I rounded up a few friends and went to 2 full days/nights of non stop concerts downtown San Diego. They roped off a few blocks in the heart of the city, set up about 4 different stages and had over 40 bands/artists playing the whole time. It was spectacular.

A few favorites included:

-Beck
-Cold War Kids
-Spoon
-The Hives
-Steele Pulse
-Devo (Whip it good!)

Lately..

San Diego has been my home for 6 months now and you may wonder what it is I do with myself out here these days... Well, here is my routine...I work... I am in the process of transferring hospitals within Scripps Healthcare as part of a "Corporate H.R. Re-Organizational Procedure" It actually doesnt effect me much other then I have to get to know a new team and I will be located at the 'Big Bad' Hospital on the other side of the freeway doing the same sort of "Corporate Polital Policy Regulating Crap", aka.. Human Resources. Yes, I am the "Toby" and everybody hates me...I play... I have been making a point to take advantage of the beautiful weather and amazing scenery that is in my backyard, afterall I did move to SD for a reason. Considering I live where people pay mucho deniero to vacation, I figure I might as well "vacation" on my off hours. So a few times a week I will ride my bike down the Ocean boardwalk and onto the bay. It is so peaceful and beautiful just steps outside my home that I cant think of a better way to clear my mind, get some exercise and spend time outdoors :)

***Here are some videos we attempted to create to demonstrate our almost daily routine. Jason is teaching me to longboard, which is rapidly climbing the charts to becoming my new favorite hobby, I must say years of snowboarding has made it easy for me to love all board sports :)
(filming steady while riding a bike or a board is much harder then you may think)

I hang out with this guy
...
30. Architect. Total Babe.
:)

I sleep... For a second, then wake up at 5:45am and do it all over again.

Update in a nutshell..

New things....

Im working on pics, I swear. I have some down time at work so here is what I have been up to since my last post, I will try to elaborate more when I can sit down at a coffee shop with the internet over the weekend...

~But for now and in a nutshell, here is an update of my difficult life..

*In the state of California you can no longer talk on the phone while driving, it has been a rough patch in my life (I may soon need therapy or at least a headset)
*I started taking boxing classes! Yes, Boxing. I am sore all the time, discovered muscles I didnt know I had and could most likely beat you up :) Its been great.
*After 6 months and a new set of sparkplugs, my "check engine" light finally went off, I couldn't be happier.
*I have been going to the horses races on a weekly basis and improving my betting skills, In total, I am proud to say I have won $9
*I can now ride a wave, standing on the board for a total of 4.5 seconds, Im considered awesome.
*I recevied some care packages from home (thank you) and I discovered I really like receving care packages so anyone else interested in sending them my way, please email me for the shipping address and I will gladly provide it... I like food and pictures :)
*I have become domestic and learned to make boiled eggs (thanks for walking me through the process mom, they turned out great) I have also become addicted to swiffer sweepers
* I joined the 'Big Brothers Big Sisters' foundation and I hopefully get to meet my new friend soon.

Thats all for I have for now please stay tuned for pics to come...

Have a great weekend! Miss you all! Come Visit!

HAPPY INDEPENDANCE DAY!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Independence before we are completely dependant on foreign goods, Chinese oil and Indian labor! Go America! :)

I spent the day with a million tourists on my very crowded beach , would have rather been at the Hyrum parade! Wow, its amazing how annoying tourists get when you become a local living in a tourist hot spot!... I think I took pics, maybe...I'll look and see.

Emily Tagged Me! ... & Im bored

So here ya go.. I haven't posted anything for awhile but the good news is that I just discovered that I could hack into the neighbors internet connection! Woo Hoo! I have internet at home again ...yes!

What I was doing 10 years ago:

10 years ago... I was a slightly awkward high school twerp enjoying the many identity crisis that came my way. The phases such as wearing my best friends dads jeans to school cause the bigger the jeans the better and the oh so popular, punk rocker phase where the crazier I could make my hair and the more necklaces I wore at once the cooler I became. At the time I was also full of brilliant ideas such as joining the tennis team cause I thought I would look cute in the skirts and deciding that driving my car into the neighbors mailbox while they were in the front yard would be a great idea.. It was a time of sneaking out at night to toilet paper Duffy (the crazy neighbor) and "going out" with every popular squeaky voice boy in school.

Oh how I miss being young, awkward and brilliant...

5 things on my "to-do" list today:
1. Shower
2. Clean my dwelling
3. Kiss a boy
4. Win the lottery
5. Go surfing.

Bad habits:
-Im a Haslam so of course I bite my nails
-Thinking out loud
-Falling asleep in the hallway & on top of my warm laundry (i find it cozy)
-Not listening to voicemails until they are at least 2 months old
-Laughing at inappropriate times (like when people get hurt or its 'serious' time)

5 places I've lived:
South Jordan, Utah (childhood days)
Boise, Idaho (where i call home)
Logan, Utah (awe, college years)
Bountiful, Utah (no thanks)
San Diego, California (my current paradise)

I love new adventures!!

6 jobs that I've had:
1.Checker at Kings (great job with w excellent perks such as the cute stock boy)
2.Therapy Tech for Disability Agency (most amazing co-workers and people on the planet!)
3.College Student (my favorite job thus far)
4.Therapy Director & Residential Manager for Chrysalis Enterprises (Disability Agency)- Working with the best people in the world! Most rewarding job..by far!
5.Human Resource Coordinator- Salt Lake Regional Medical Center (First "grown up, post-college" job, ... ick)
6.Clinical Recruitment Specialist- Scripps Healthcare! (finally in San Diego, working at the best company in the nation :) . . .

Oh yeah, and the most important job of all.. Professional 'mans lady' (like ladies man only the other way around:)

4 people I want to know more about:
Daniel
Emilee
Mom
Dad
You

My new change..

So Friday morning at work, I got called into the medical conference room with 5 other people in my division and was told that they were eliminating all our jobs due to funding and what not. So in a nutshell, I was laid off (with an exceptional severance package.) My first reaction was sheer disbelief and my second was "oh crap, I need a job!".. I got laid off?!? I always thought only dads and old "career" people got laid off, so you can imagine my shock in the matter considering I am not a dad nor an old "career" person.
Well I got home and immediately started searching for a new job, well I stumbled across a position in H.R. at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla (which happens to be one of the best hospitals in the nation and is located in the most beautiful city right on Torry Pines Golf Course.) Well I got a call about an hour after I applied, went in the same day for a 3 hour interview, (ugh) and was offered a job that same day! As ironic as it seems, I couldn't be more ecstatic about getting laid off at Rady Children's!
Scripps was the number one place I wanted to work for the past two years, it was my goal to someday work there and now, I'm on board! Goal set, goal achieved, one point for me. It is incredibly hard to get on at Scripps plus the market here couldn't be worse right now so I don't know if it was fate that I got canned or what, but I am siked about my new opportunity. I start next Monday so I am planning on spending my week off 'real' work, soaking in the sun and scouting out hot surfer dudes (well not really, ok ... really.) Well that is my update for today, Scripps Memorial here I come! Woot! Woot!

I made it to San Diego

Considering my mom continues to harass me about creating a blog so people know I'm still kickin', here goes.. Last time I had a blog was in my Journalism class in College so I'm not quite sure what to post considering I don't have pics of children, a spouse (just yet) and/or a new little home. What I do have however is a beach steps outside my house, palm trees in my front yard and a bike that takes me everywhere (yes I still own a car). I'm currently living in San Diego, Pacific Beach to be exact and working for a Children's hospital as the 'Corporate and Community Development Coordinator' (try saying that 10 times fast). Basically what I do is Market the hospital to Big Wig Businesses and Donors and convince them to give me all their money. Considering my job is really not that exciting, I picked up a serving job at a new little restaurant right off the ocean, which is proving to be much more fun then my 'grown up' job. My life is simple (although I'm not quite sure what to do with all my hefty duty winter coats I accumulated while at Utah State) my life remains at a perfect 74 degrees at all times. I'm learning to surf and sail and can see the Seaworld fireworks from my porch every night. I love it here and although I miss everyone especially the little turkeys (nieces and nephews) I am convinced moving here was one of the best decisions I have made.. Now I just need to work on getting in to Graduate School, eventually.
